The grand event “Setouchi Shimanowa 2014” being jointly hosted by the Hiroshima and Ehime Prefectures takes place this year, which marks the 80th anniversary of the Seto Inland Sea being designated a national park and the 15th anniversary of the opening of the Shimanami expressway. The event will be held in the broad areas of the prefectures’ islands and waterfront areas between March 21st and October 26th.

A new “island exposition” unfolds through a an island ring of harmony
This first-time exposition will promote throughout Japan the appeal of the Seto Inland Sea through its beautiful scenery, delicious bounty of the sea, rich culture, traditions and other world-class things. The biggest theme is the continuation of bonds that are born through the event.
The tag line is “A ring of islands, connected by a ring (harmony) of people.” They wish to expand the “rings” by fostering interaction among those living in Setouchi, as well as with those visiting. They plan to conduct over 200 events over the duration of the expo, and are targeting a visitor number of 800,000.

Starting with the opening event taking place on March 21st at the Miyajima Bridge Park and Itsukushima Shrine, 32 large-scale seasonal events will be held during the expo until October.
Generate Excitement with Hand-Made Events
Many events are planned during the expo which are not bureaucrat-led, but are privately planned and implemented by community residents such as individuals, community resident groups, NPOs, and businesses. These non-governmental projects are designed to attract customers to tourist resources that exist on the islands and waterfront areas.
Expos bring to mind large-scale establishments such as pavilions, but this expo differentiates itself from others by focusing on a hand-made feel that combines the traditional festivals of different regions with new events.
The new appeal of the Setouchi brand is expected to expand through this event.
