At the end of April, Prime Minister Abe became the first prime minister of Japan to visit Russia in 10 years. After a meeting, Abe and its counterpart President Putin announced the “Joint Statement on the Development of Japan-Russia Partnership.” The joint statement not only talks about the national security and defense partnership with a view to the Japan-Russo Peace Treaty, but it also touches on developing the economic ties between the two countries by, for example, establishing the “Russo-Japanese Investment Platform” as the framework for making capital contributions and loans available to Japanese companies entering Russia.
