The bankruptcy of gas station has been increasing in Japan

There are total of 1,228 gas stations filed for bankruptcy or stopped operations in the past 5 years.

In 2011, there were 56 bankruptcies: up by 14.3% from 2010.

The automobile owners has been decreasing since 2007 in Japan, and has a huge impact on gas station businesses; furthermore, Rules for the Control of hazardous materials was updated and now there is a obligation for all the underground gas storage tanks that are more than 40-year-old to be renovated.

This renovation requires a month long construction and several tens of thousands of dollars of investment; thus, this change of law has become a burden to all the struggling businesses.
